Conventional heat detector operates by utilising a matched pair of thermistors to sense heat. One of these thermistors is exposed to the ambient temperature, while the other is sealed inside the detector housing. Under normal conditions, both thermistors register similar readings. As fire develops, the temperature registered by the exposed thermistor will rise rapidly, resulting in an imbalance, causing the detector to go into its alarm condition

Rate of rise heat detectors also have an upper temperature limit at which the detector will go into alarm if the rate of temperature increase was too slow to trigger the detector earlier. The Fyreye Class CS (Static response or fi xed temperature) heat detector has only one thermistor, and changes to the alarm state at a preset temperature.
