There are two main different types of hydrants – each with its own particular features. The right choice will depend on factors like water pressure, particular requirements and so on. Some different types of hydrants are
1. Wet Barrel Hydrants
Its directly attached to the pressurized water source. The barrel, which is above the ground, is filled with water. The hydrant could have different openings, each with its own valve to regulate its opening and closing. This also allows the firefighters to attach multiple hose to one hydrant. The above ground mechanical parts ensure that the valves and nozzle are easy to use. It also has a valve to ensure that debris do the enter its opening. Its one of the most long-lasting designs with many wet barrel designs aged at more than a century
2. Dry Barrel Hydrants
Here the hydrant does not have a direct connection with the water source. Instead, it is separated by a main valve at the lower end of the hydrant. This means that the upper portion of the hydrant remains dry till the main valve is opened up. Water supply is later shut-off by simply turning off the valve. The valve is operated through a long stem that extends through the top. The dry barrel hydrant is a popular choice wherever there are chances of freezing. The dry barren design is further divided in three types according to the stem: compression, slide-gate, and toggle Other factors that you have to consider Water pressure; Hydrants need a certain amount of water pressure to work efficiently. This also means big pipes and high flow and pressure water system.
